Faith In Action

Elder Robert D. Hales Audio file

“As companies continue to downsize or close, even ideal employees may find themselves needing to find new employment. This is an opportunity to rely on the Lord, to grow, and to be strengthened. If you are seeking a new job, increase your faith in the Lord’s desire and power to bless you. Also seek counsel from those you trust, and don’t be afraid to network and ask for help in finding a new job. If necessary, change your lifestyle—and possibly your place of residence—to live within your means. Willingly seek additional training and learn new skills, regardless of your age. Maintain your health and stay close to your spouse and children. And, above all, be grateful. Express your gratitude in prayer for all that has been given to you. Heavenly Father loves you. His Son has promised, ‘all these things shall give [you] experience, and shall be for [your] good’ (D&C 122:7).”

Developing Your Elevator Speech Script

Developing your elevator speech is not hard, it is just something that you probably have not done.  An elevator speech is a 30-second commercial for yourself.  If done properly, it tells people:

  • what capabilities you currently have
  • what opportunities you are seeking
  • how they can help you
Here is an outline for you elevator speech:

My name is _________________________

I am a _____(_what you do for a living)____

My key strengths and abilities are ________(what you really do well)_____

I have a ___________(qualifications; i.e., degree, license, certifications, specialized skills, etc.)____

In my most recent role __(recent success and accomplishments that focus on savings, new business, etc.)__

I am now seeking ____(an opportunity/position in:  an industry/company/geography, etc.)_______

Do you know of any opportunities that might be a match for what I am seeking?

Do you know of anyone who might be a good networking contact?

In order to sound natural, efficient and effective, your elevator speech must be memorized and rehearsed. You must be ready to share it at any time and in any situation with appropriate adaptations depending on the setting and with whom your are speaking.  It should become a natural way to promote yourself and you career desires.
